Poverty and hunger go hand and hand. According to recent census data, Blue Earth County ranks 82nd out of 87 counties for its high poverty rate of 16.9%. In addition, Feeding America conducted a study and found that the food insecurity rate of Blue Earth County residents is 12.7%, which is approximately 7,580 residents, and higher than the state average.
This project is a unique collaboration between Blue Earth County and Feeding Our Communities Partners. The Blue Earth County Community Farm's goal is to decrease hunger in our area by providing fresh produce to hunger assistance programs such as ECHO Food Shelf and the Salvation Army. The farm provides an opportunity for the entire community to get involved in ending hunger. Volunteers plant, maintain, harvest, and distribute fresh produce to local hunger assistance programs. The farm is located in Weagel park, at the intersection of State Highway 66 and Indian Lake Road near Mount Kato in Mankato, Minnesota.
Currently, we are looking for the support of local businesses and community members to help offset the costs associated with the farm. In return for sponsorships or in-kind donations, we will include your organization on signage at the farm.
